Sign-O-Pedia: English Heritage Plaque

About the tag

Background

English Heritage - an organization that takes care of the restoration and preservation of sites in the United Kingdom, established in 1983.
Before the establishment of the organization, at the end of the 19th century, the care of historical buildings was in the hands of the British Ministry of Labor. The authority to care for historic buildings or sites was expanded, and the pool of buildings kept growing, reaching about 300 sites in 1970. In 1983, under Margaret Thatcher’s rule, the care of buildings was transferred to a body established specifically for this purpose: the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission. This body merged with another body (the Royal Commission), until in 2015 the body was split into two, one with legislative powers, and the other English Heritage - a charitable foundation responsible for the historical sites themselves. Famous sites under the responsibility of the organization are: Stonehenge, Dover Castle, London Wall , Kenwood house and of course the blue round signs found in this series .

Signs placed before 1983 bear the name Greater London Council or the name London County Council (LCC)
(The earliest sign on the site was placed in 1908 )

In 2023 there are more than 900 official signs placed by an organization or its predecessor organizations.
