Haim Selig Slonimski 1810-1904
Founder and editor of "Ha-Tsfira" the first Hebrew newspaper in Poland. Worked mainly in Warsaw. Compiled scientific texts in Hebrew, dealing with mathematics, astronomy, optics, engineering and more. He devoted a large space to these matters in his newspaper, thus bringing the innovations of science to the audience of Hebrew readers. Also worked on various inventions, the most famous of which is the calculating machine (1844). He won recognition and awards for this invention.
For a time he served as head of the Beit Midrash for teachers and rabbis in Zhytomyr and as a censor of books in Hebrew and Yiddish on behalf of the Russian government.
