Translation of the text on the sign:

Shlomo Rubin
1823-1910
A prolific researcher of the Enlightenment writers. He operated in the cities of Galicia (now western Ukraine and southeastern Poland). His research encompassed many areas in the "wisdom of Israel" (Judaic sciences) such as the study of history, Hebrew literature, linguistics, Jewish philosophy, religions of the ancient east, folklore and more. He had a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Göttingen (1868). As an educated man with a penchant for freedom of thought and belief, he dealt a lot with Baruch Spinoza, the Jewish philosopher. He translated books and plays into Hebrew, the most prominent of which is Gutzkow’s German play "Uriel da Costa" (1857). He made a living, among other things, from accounting and teaching and was the first director of the Jewish school in Bolekhiv.
