The column was built on the occasion of the victory of the British Navy in the Battle of Trafalgar against Napoleon’s forces, under the leadership of Admiral Nelson (who was killed in this battle).
The column was placed in 1843, and around its base are 4 metal plates describing Nelson’s great victories.
The relief on the plaque shown at the top of the page depicts Nelson’s death at the Battle of Trafalgar. The text on the plate is the signal that Admiral Nelson sent to his soldiers at the beginning of the battle (using the naval signal flags)
On another plate, the relief depicts the Battle of the Nile (Battle of Abukir Bay) and the text appears on it MOORE, FRESSANGE & MOORE NILE 1799 W.F. WOODINGTON Click for a larger image
