The statue commemorates Admiral David Beatty, who was the commander of the British Navy in the second half of the First World War.

The statue was made by sculptor William MacMillan and was dedicated in 1948 on Trafalgar Day (October 21, the day Admiral Nelson won the Battle of Trafalgar).
