The statue commemorates Admiral John Jellicoe, who was the commander of the British Navy in the First World War.

The statue was made by sculptor Charles Wheeler and was dedicated in 1948 on Trafalgar Day (October 21, the day Admiral Nelson won the Battle of Trafalgar).
