A facility created with the purpose of raising groundwater to the ground so that it is accessible to humans. Water wells have existed since the dawn of history , , , and were usually established immediately upon the establishment of a new settlement, to provide water to the settlement (in modern times, there is often no need for a well and the water is transported through pipes from distant water sources).
