בור המים
ממוצע המשקעים באזור סוסיא הוא כ-250 מ"מ בשנה. מיקומו של היישוב בִּסְפַר המדבר, שהיה דל במקורות מים טבעיים (מעיינות או בארות), הציב אתגר גדול בפני תושביה הקדמונים של סוסיא. עשרות בורות מים ומערכת ענפה של תעלות הטיה וניקוז שנמצאן במקום, מעידים על כך שהתושבים השכילו להתמודד עם בעיות האקלים ולאגור כל טיפת גשם לצורכי הבית ולהשקיית בעלי החיים במשך כל ימות השנה, גם בימי הקיץ החמים.

תושבי המקום נתנו דעתם גם על בעיות היגיינה ובטיחות: על שפת כל בור הוצבה חוליית אבן, לא רק למניעת אידוי, אלא גם לשמירה על ניקיון המים ועל בטיחותם של העוברים והשבים. זוהי "חוליית הבור" הנזכרת במקורות חז"ל. באחד המפורסמים שבהם מסופר "נכנסו חכמי ישראל אצלו (אצל דוד המלך). אמרו לו: ’אדוננו המלך, עמך ישראל צריכין פרנסה!’ אמר להם: ’לכו והתפרנסו זה מזה’, אמרו לו: ’אין הקומץ משביע את הארי ואין הבור מתמלא מחולייתו’" (בבלי, ברכות,ג ע"ב)

Water Cistern
The average annual rainfall in Susya is 250 mm (10 inches). The location of the ancient village - on the edge of the desert, and with scanty water sources like springs or wells - posed a serious problem for its inhabitants. Dozens of dry cisterns, and an extensive system of water channels discovered on the site, are evidence of the effective solution they found. Runoff rain water was stored for domestic needs and livestock throughout the year, even in the heat of summer.

The inhabitants addressed issues of hygiene and safety as well. The mouth of every cistern was covered by a stone ring, not only to prevent evaporation, but to maintain the purity of the water and avoid accidents. A famous reference to such a "cistern ring" appears in the Talmud: "the Sages of Israel came before (King David) and said: ’Our lord the King, your people Israel need a livelihood.’ He said to them: ’Go and provide for each other.’ They responded: ’One handful of food will not satisfy a lion, and a cistern will not be filled from [what rain falls only through) its ring.’" (Bavli, Berachot, 3b)
