NOTO

CATHEDRAL SAN NICOLÒ OF MIRA

It is the main religious building in the city, erected between the late 17th and 19th centuries. On 13 March 1996 a disastrous collapse affected the dome and a large part of the roof, now rebuilt.
The facade, which majestically rises on top of a wide staircase with three flights, is enclosed by two side towers and brings together elements of neo-sixteenth, eighteenth-century and neoclassical style inspiration.
Inside there is a silver urn (16th century) with the remains of the patron saint of the city, S. Corrado Confalonieri.

Comments:
The city of Noto and several other cities in the Val di Noto region (southeast Sicily), were recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2002 mainly because of the late Baroque style that characterizes many of their sites.

The city’s cathedral is named after Saint Nicholas (279-343) who was the bishop of the city of Mira (Turkey). Known as a miracle worker and gift giver, the character of Santa Claus is based on him.
The cathedral was built in 1776, and like other buildings in Noto it is also built in the Baroque style.
