The gate is one of the 8 gates of the Etruscan Wall of Perusia (former name of Perugia). The Etruscans lived in northern Italy from the tenth century BC until the third century BC when the Romans took over their cities.
This gate, which remains intact, was built in the third century BC and restored by Augustus Caesar in 40 BC after his victory in the Perusine War (40-41 BC)
