The sign commemorates Cesare Battisti (1875-1916), a geographer, journalist and statesman of Austrian origin who worked to unify regions with ethnic identity (such as the Tyrol region). Battisti fought in the First World War with the Italian forces, and after being captured in 1916 by the Austro-Hungarian forces, he was executed for treason. The sign is on the street named after him
