The obelisk was originally placed at the entrance to the Luxor Temple in Egypt. In 1829 the obelisk was given as a gift to France. The obelisk was transported to France by ship from the port of Alexandria. The obelisk arrived in Paris at the end of 1833. The obelisk was placed in the Place de la Concorde on October 25, 1836.
