On the sign:
Boris Nemtsov 9 October 1959-27 February 2015
Camden remembers Boris Nemtsov, who courageously stood up for democracy, justice and peace.
Boris Nemtsov, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia under Boris Yeltsin, led opposition to and openly criticised Vladimir Putins government. He labelled it a dictatorship, exposed government corruption and stood up against military interventions in Ukraine. He was assassinated in Moscow in 2015.
Following his death, democracy campaigner Vladimir Kara-Murza has worked to honour his legacy and spoken out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The plaque commemorates the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia in 1997-1998, one of the leaders of the Alliance of Right-Wing Forces (a right-wing liberal party), a fierce critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was assassinated in Moscow in 2015.
Vladimir Kara-Murza mentioned on the sign is a media person, who also opposes Putin, survived 2 poisoning attempts, and in 2023 was sent to prison for 25 years because of his opposition to the war in Ukraine.
