Please respect our wildlife sanctuary The island in Model Boating Pond is closed to the public and dogs to allow for wildlife to thrive
Since the island in Model Boating Pond was created as part of the Ponds Project, which was completed in 2016, it has become a refuge for many different types of water fowl including Egyptian Geese (which bred on the island), coots, great crested grebes and ducks. These birds use the island as a safe place to rest and to find food.
In the summer months the island is covered in wildflowers which are very popular with pollinating insects and dragon flies. The aquatic planting around the island is an important habitat for amphibians, insects, birds and fish. Wildlife is thriving here and the area will remain closed to the public and dogs for this reason.
The City of London provides 14 green spaces in and around London for the benefit of local communities. Most are registered charities operating at little cost to the general public.
