Political-military historical background of the event End of the War of Independence
During the War of Independence, Arab villages throughout the country were abandoned and occupied, including the village of al-Falujah and Iraq al-Manashia (today - the cemetery in Kiryat Gat), these villages were occupied as part of "Operation Yoav" whose goal was to break through the road to the besieged Negev and create a sequence of settlements from the center to the settlements of the Negev. The area of the Fallujah pocket, today’s Kiryat Gat, was where the battle began and its success finally led to the occupation of the Negev.
Fedayeen period
A year after the end of the War of Independence, the Fedayeen period began. "Fedayeen" - is a nickname for various terrorist groups of Arab terrorists who were activated by government officials in the neighboring Arab countries. These terrorists initially infiltrated the territories of Israel to save crops or property left in their villages which were abandoned in the War of Independence, but soon these infiltrations were aimed at the purposes of terrorist attacks and damage to the settlers’ property from the 1950s until Operation Kadesh (1956). During this period the border fence was mostly unmarked and without a physical obstacle.
Retaliatory actions
Following the Fedayeen, Unit 101 was established in the IDF with the purpose of carrying out military operations and deterring the terrorists and the leadership of Arab countries in order to prevent further infiltration and harm to Israeli citizens. These operations were called "retaliation operations", the unit carried out a large number of patrols across the border, and many operations of raids and ambushes , in order to deter the enemy, a significant part of these operations were carried out deep in enemy territory.
Settlement in the eastern Lachish region
In the Lachish area, despite the complicated and difficult security situation, they continued to go up on the ground, and in 1955, the moshavs of Lachish and Emzia went up on the ground. The area is considered the Wild West of Israel and was even nicknamed "Texas". Infiltrators penetrated this area almost unhindered. The group of young people who went up to Lakish showed that a youth can combine in his actions a concern for his personal future together with a concern for the future of his country.
