Judea Lowlands and Lachish Valley We are in a region called the "Lowland of Judah". What is "Lowland" and who is "Judas"?
Our tiny country has a number of landscape forms, in the Lachish region - four forms that create a special section for us from west to east: the coastal plain, the Judean plains, the Jerusalem mountains and the Judean desert.
The origin of the term "lowland" is the "lowlands" - the lowland region is a gradual connection like mountain slopes between the high Judean mountains and the relatively low coastal plain. The lowland is also divided into sub-regions - high lowland and low lowland (lowland - the word lowland reminds of something low, bad, low, but here it has a completely different meaning as we have seen).
its borders; In the east - the Judean mountains, in the northeast - the edge of the Samaria mountains, the Afek area - Rosh Ha’in, the route of Nahal Ayalon. In the northwest - the sands of Rishon LeZion. In the south - north of the Negev, Nahal Shakma area
Why "Judas"? Judah was one of the twelve sons of Jacob - the twelve tribes of Israel
In the book of Genesis we see the blessings that our father Jacob gives to his sons (the tribes) before his death. To each and every son Jacob gives a blessing which can be a prophecy, prayer or hope. When Jacob blesses Judah, he says to him like this: "Judah, thee shall thy brethren praise; thy hand shall be on the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s sons shall bow down before thee. Judah is a lion’s whelp; from the prey, my son, thou art gone up. He stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as a lioness; who shall rouse him up? The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, as long as men come to Shiloh; and unto him shall the obedience of the peoples be. Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass’s colt unto the choice vine; he washeth his garments in wine, and his vesture in the blood of grapes; His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk."
(Genesis 39:8-12).
In the first part of the blessing we can see a wish for rule and heroism, and as mentioned from Judah came King David. (David and Goliath battle that was also in the Judean plains to the north of us in the Elah valley).
In the book of 1 Samuel (17:1-3) the famous battle between David and Goliath is described in the Elah Valley, which is about ten kilometers north of us "Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and they were gathered together at Socoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim. And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched in the vale of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines. And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side; and there was a valley between them."
And in the second part of the blessing, an abundance of grapes and their produce is described. In the following stations we will see the Judean lowland blessed with excellent and good vineyards (dew grapes) and indeed Jacob’s blessing to Judah is still being fulfilled today.
In the book of Joshua (chapter 15) the conquest of the land is described, the division of the land into tribal possessions (1200 BC). The borders of the tribe of Yehuda are described, in the north of Jerusalem, and south to the Negev (to the north of the Lachish region is the Yehuda Regional Council). The cities in which the tribe of Judah settles in their inheritance are described below: "Lachish and Betzkat, and Eglon..." The city of Lachish is the biblical city that we recognize today in Tel Lachish located in the "Lowland of Judah".
