DEFENSE POSITION 1
Located at the top of the southwest hill, this Defense Position sustained the heavy Egyptian artillery fire which started on May 19-22, 1948. The following day, the Israeli mortar ammunition ran out, and the Browning machine gun was hit and left inoperative. Following the Egyptian infantry attack supported by tanks, the Israeli defenders were forced to abandon this position. An Egyptian infantry unit stormed the trench that led to the hill and seized the position. After a fierce battle, this position was recaptured. Around this position eight Israeli defenders were killed.
