The Palmach The Palmach was the enlisted military force of the Haganah and was widely active, heroically serving as an army prior to the establishment of the state until it was disbanded and integrated into the Israel Defense Forces in 1948. The Palmach was established on May 15, 1941 under the command of the brave Yitzchak Sadeh. During the initial stages of the War of Independence, the Palmach was the backbone of the military force of the Yishuv, playing a central role in the battles of the North and center, and bearing the brunt of defending the Negev. "Though the storm may rage around us. Forward all with head held high. Ever ready to fulfill a command. Our Palmach flag in the sky." (anthem of the Palmach)
