Place Plumereau

Place Plumereau
The Western district of the city retains a significant number of timbered houses built for the most part, in the 15th and 16th centuries. This square, used as a fruit market, occupied a much smaller space before 1397. The houses were once lived in by artisans and traders whose shops occupied the ground floor. The upper floors were living quarters.

The houses on the South side of the square are typical Touraine houses. They are characterised by a slight corbel and a projecting roof which protects the guttering. For their better protection, the façades are in some cases entirely covered with slates. The house on the corner of the rue du Change and the rue du Commerce is notable decoration. The two carved pilgrims on the streets refer to pilgrimages to the shrines of Saint-Martin and St James of Compostella.

Since 1973 the city of Tours has had a designated conservation area created under the 4th August 1962 Loi Malraux (Malraux Law). As a result of this there is a scheme of conservation and revitalization the buildings and urban spaces
