SIR THOMAS MORE

The statue made by Leslie Cubitt Bevis and placed in 1969 shows the figure of the jurist, thinker and statesman Sir Thomas More (1535-1478). Moore, who served as Lord Chancellor (Lord Keeper of the Seal), was a Catholic humanist who, despite his humanism, oppressed the Protestants. He is the father of the term "utopia". Moore was executed for not recognizing King Henry VIII as head of the Anglican Church. In 1935 he was recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church.
