From the 16th century Perugia was under the rule of the Papal States. In 1859 the members of the Pope’s Swiss Guard killed many residents of the city who tried to rebel, but in 1860 the uprising was successful, and Umbria including Perugia moved to be in the Kingdom of Italy. The Bersaglieri are infantry soldiers first formed in the Kingdom of Sardinia, and later integrated into the army of the United Italy. The sign was placed in 2020 on the 160th anniversary of the liberation of the city and is located on the street named after the Bersaglieri soldiers.
The place where the sign is located is near the city gate which the local residents opened to the forces rebelling against the Pope. Taken on the same day by the same photographer Click for a larger image
