LONDON COUNTY COUNCIL
Field Marshal VISCOUNT ALLENBY 1861-1936 lived here 1928-1936
The sign is on the wall of the house where Field Marshal Edmund Henry Hynman Allenby (1861-1936) lived, the British army man who is best known as the one who conquered the Land of Israel from the Turks in the First World War. In 1917, Allenby was sent to Egypt as commander-in-chief of the Egyptian expeditionary force, subdued the Ottoman army and reached Damascus and Aleppo in Syria. In 1919 he was appointed the governor of Egypt, a position he held until 1925 when he retired, and shortly after that he moved into this house.
