ABBEY GATE
[map of the area]
The Abbey Gate into the Medieval Priory Close once stood near to this spot. There was a chamber over it, probably part of the Porters Lodge. The map of 1634 shows the Gate House at the south-west corner of the monastery, which occupied a large part of the old walled city.
The sign indicates the place where in the Middle Ages there was a gate to Bath Abbey. The attached map from 1634 describes the area. The gate also had a pavilion that was destroyed in the 18th century
