השמורה משתרעת על פני כ-300 דונם באגן הניקוז של נחל שקמה. היא נקראת על שם חורבת פורה, שנמצאת בגבולה המערבי. ייחודה של השמורה במחשופי סלע מניל האיאוקן - אי טבעי בינות לאדמות הלס המעובדות מסביבה. השמורה שוכנת באזור מעבר אקלימי בין החבל הים תיכוני לחבל המדברי ומהווה בית גידול ייחודי. מהצמחים הרב-שנתיים אפשר לראות את האטד הערבי ואת השלהבית קצרת-השיניים. בעונת הפריחה השמורה משופעת במרבדי כלניות, פרנים ונוריות אסיה לצד אירוס ארצישראלי ודבורנית דינסמור.

تمتد المحمية الطبيعية على مساحة نحو 300 دونم في حوض تصريف وادي شكما الحسي، سميت نسبة إلى خربة فورة التي تقع على حدودها الغربية. تتميز المحمية بالنتوءات الصخرية من العصر الإيوسيني - جزيرة طبيعية بين أراضي الراسب الطفالي المزروعة حولها تقع المحمية في منطقة مناخية انتقالية بين منطقة البحر الأبيض المتوسط والمنطقة الصحراوية وتشكل موئلاً مميزاً، من بين النباتات المعمرة نستطيع أن نرى العوسج نبتة السراجية قصيرة الأوراق، تمتلئ المحمية في موسم الإزهار بمساحات من شقائق النعمان الخشخاش والبرقوق، إلى جانب السوسن وأوفريس نحلة دينسمور.

The reserve extends over 300 dunams (30 hectares) in the Shikma Stream drainage basin. It is named after the Pura Ruins, which are located on its western edge. The reserve’s special characteristic are its outcroppings of Eocene-era limestone - a natural island among the surrounding cultivated loess soil. The reserve occupies a transition area between the Mediterranean and the arid zones and constitutes a unique habitat. Among the perennials found here are Arabian boxthorn (Lycium shawii), and Jerusalem sage (Phlomis brachyodon). In blooming season the reserve is covered with a carpet of crown anemone (Anemone coronaria), poppy (Papaver) and Asian buttercup (Ranunculus asiaticus), alongside Iris palaestina and bee orchid (Ophrys umbilicata).
