Ancient Living Quarters - The Excavated House
This area has two excavated complexes: western and eastern, separated by an alley. Only a small section of the western complex has been fully uncovered. The eastern complex has two excavated structures, northern and southern, separated by a courtyard with two cisterns.
A drainage canal that led water to the cistern was uncovered south of the cistern, along with a
sedimentation tank and an outdoor clay oven (tabun) at the corner of the courtyard. An opening to an underground domestic ritual bath (mikveh), proof of a Jewish settlement, was also found. The structures, where two layers, of use were identified, were built during the ancient Roman period.
The second phase, where slight modifications were applied to the layout, dates back to the ancient Byzantine and Islamic periods.
