Reed
The common reed, a member of the grass family, is found near water sources and appears in Hebrew Scriptures not only as a uselul tool but also as a symbol. Reeds have long (3-5 meters), straight and hollow stems. The reed’s flexibility keeps it from breaking in strong wind.
The Sages explained why the reed was chosen to be the pen used by the scribe to write Torah scrolls, phylacteries (tefilin) and mezuzot: "A man should always be pliable as the reed and never unbending as the cedar" (Babylonian Talmud, Ta’anit 22,71b). The reed is also used for making fences, mats, fishing rods flutes and more.
