On the sign:
THIS SUNDIAL WAS BUILT IN 1694 BY EDWARD PIERCE AND THOMAS NEALE REMOVED FROM SEVEN DIALS IN 1773 AND REBUILT 1989
The sundial actually consists of 6 sundials located at the top of the pillar. Originally there were 6 roads that ended in a square and that is the reason for the 6 clocks, Thomas Neale who planned the area eventually managed to add another street. Thats why the junction is called Seven Dials, but the number of clocks still remains 6.
On another side of the base of the column there is another sign indicating the dedication of the renewed column in 1989: UNVEILED BY HER MAJESTY QUEEN BEATRIX OF THE NETHERLANDS, JUNE 29, 1989 Click for a larger image Around the square there is a metal strip with the names of the bodies involved in supporting the square and the area: For example the first bodies LONDON COUNCIL • HASLEMERE ESTATES P.L.C • HOSKYNS GROUP P.L.C Click for a larger image
