The sign is dedicated to the actor Sir Alec Guinness (1914-2000), one of the most senior British theater and film actors. Guinness won the Academy Award (Best Actor) for his performance in the movie "The Bridge on the River Kwai", he also won an honorary Academy Award, honorary doctorate degrees, and many other awards.
The building on which the sign is located, serves as the headquarters of the players union. The sign was placed in 1996, and is one of 126 signs placed by the British Film Institute to mark 100 years of cinema (the film by the Lumière brothers shown in Paris in December 1895).
