"בגלל כושרו של האדם לצדק, הדמוקרטיה היא אפשרית, אך בגלל נטייתו לאי-צדק, הדמוקרטיה היא הכרחית" (ריינהולד ניבור)
"Man’s capacity for justice makes democracy possible, but man’s inclination to injustice makes democracy necessary." (Reinhold Niebuhr)
In the current plaque appears the saying of Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971), an American Protestant theologian who worked for workers rights, opposed racism and tried to find the connection between the Christian religion and politics. His writings greatly influenced Martin Luther King. The quote is taken from his book "The Children of Light and the Children of Darkness" which was written in 1944 and dealt with the way in which a democracy should protect itself (especially in light of the events of World War II).
