The statue is located in Parliament Square, and is one of the 12 statues surrounding the square.

The statue shows Jan Christian Smuts, who was Prime Minister of South Africa for two periods.

The bronze statue in which Smuts is seen dressed in military uniform was made by Jacob Epstein. It was Churchill’s initiative to erect the statue, but he could not be present at the dedication ceremony in 1956 due to his health.
