Vitex agnus-castus

Chaste tree
Vitex agnus-castus

Natural range: Mediterranean basin, S.W. Asia, Israel

In mid-summer’s heat, when few campus trees bloom, this species’ brilliant bluish-pink flowers brighten this landscape. The Hebrew name (translated as "Abraham’s bush"), refers to the patriarch’s finding, tangled in a bush, the ram ’he sacrificed instead of Isaac.

[a question]
Look at a leaf of this tree: how would you describe its shape?

[The fourth face of the cube]

[The Answer to the question]
This tree’s leaves are compound, consisting usually of 5 separate, small "leaflets," all arising from the same leaf stalk. They resemble a hand with its fingers. These leaflets and stalk form an integral structure that is born, grows, dies, and falls as a single unit.
