Populus nigra, var.italica

Black Lombardy Poplar
Populus nigra, var. italica

Natural range: (Cultivated variety, with no natural range)

Gardeners found this narrow mutant variety of poplar in Lombardy, Italy, some 250 years ago. All trees of this variety are males. As male trees cannot produce seeds, their reproduction relies on people to make cuttings and plant them.

[a question]
What structural feature of the branches makes this tree so narrow? What other type of tree can you see from here that is also very narrow? Does it have the same structural feature?

[The fourth face of the cube]

[The Answer to the question]
This tree’s branches are angled sharply upward, making the whole tree narrow. This also explains the narrow shape of the Italian cypress, prominently visible beyond this curved path.
