בית הספר העברי הראשון למלאכות ולאומנויות
ב-1905 הוחלט בקונגרס הציוני השביעי על הקמת "בצלאל, בית מדרש למלאכות-ואומנות", וב-1908 עברו התלמידים אל הבניין המפואר שרכשה הקרן הקיימת מהאפנדי אבו - שקיר, אחד משני בניינים שנועדו להיות בית יתומים. בית הספר נקרא על שם בצלאל בן אורי, בונה המשכן וכליו.

The First Jewish School of Arts and Crafts
In 1905 the Seventh Zionist Congress decided to set up the Bezalel Arts and Crafts Academy. In 1908 its students moved into the magnificent building bought by the Jewish National Fund from Effendi Abu-Shakir, one of two buildings intended to be orphanages. The school was named after Bezalel ben Uri, who constructed the Tabernacle and made its appurtenances.

"ירושלים החדשה"
אל תלמידי "בצלאל", אשר שאפו לייסד אמנות עברית חדשה, חברו צעירים ציונים וסוציאליסטים שהאמינו שדווקא ירושלים מתאימה ליישום תפיסותיהם החברתיות המהפכניות. כך קמה קהילת "ירושלים החדשה". היצירה בכל התחומים הייתה מרכז חייהם: האמנות החזותית, החינוך, הכתיבה הספרותית והמסאית ומעל לכול - יצירת חברה חדשה בירושלים.

"New Jerusalem"
The students of Bezalel, who aspired to found anew Jewish art, were joined by young Zionists and socialists who believed that Jerusalem was the place par excellence for applying their revolutionary views. Their entire existence centered round creative works in all fields: visual art, education, books and articles, and above all, creating a new society in Jerusalem.

פסל מתתיהו החשמונאי
ב-1894 יצר שץ את פסלו "מתתיהו החשמונאי", הנחשב לחשוב שבפסליו. מתתיהו מתואר מניף את חרבו וקורא לשחרור משעבוד. הפסל הוצג בתערוכה העולמית בפריז ובעקבות זאת הוזמן שץ לבולגריה בידי הנסיך פרדיננד, לשמש פַסָל החצר ולהקים בה את האקדמיה המלכותית לאמנות.

Sculpture of Mattathias the Hasmonean
In 1894 Schatz sculpted what is considered his most important sculpture, "Mattathias the Hasmonean." Mattathias is shown brandishing his sword and calling for liberation from subjugation. The statue was exhibited at the World’s Fair in Paris and as a result Schatz received an invitation from Prince Ferdinand of Bulgaria to become court sculptor and set up the Royal Academy of Art.
