The Battle of post 14 in "Operation Yoram" (June 9-8, 1948)
On May 18, 1948, in the midst of the War of Independence, a force of the Jordanian Legion took control of the Latrun area and blocked the road to Jerusalem.
The purpose of Operation Yoram was to occupy the Latrun compound and score the way to Jerusalem two days before the first truce began. The Palmach, Yiftach and Harel brigades were selected for the mission.
In the first phase of the operation, a relatively small force of fighters from the Harel Brigade was supposed to occupy the 13th outpost in the Latrun compound (350 high altitude) - a small outpost protected by a Jordanian platoon. The occupation of the post was intended to pave the way for the third battalion of the Yiftach Brigade to occupy the 14th post (height point 315) - the large and central post of the Jordanian Legion in the Latrun area.
On June 8, after dark, Company A of the Fifth Battalion of the Harel Brigade under the command of Lt. Col. Zivi Tzafriri left the Shaar HaGai. The company was reinforced with fighters and other commanders from the brigade.
Due to a navigational error by the battalion patrolmen, Company A attacked the large 14th outpost instead of attacking the small thirteenth outpost as planned, and waged a frontal heroic battle against a Jordanian force larger than it, which was fortified and well prepared for defense. During the seven hours of heavy fighting, sixteen members of the augmented company were killed, and almost all were wounded. Nevertheless the warriors seized the outpost, with determination and without any assistance.
The Third Battalion moved as planned in the direction of outpost 13, assuming that Company A occupied it, but to its surprise encountered the fire of the Jordanian platoon and returned to its tracks,
The commanders of the operation did not understand the picture of the battle, and at first light ordered the fighters at the 14th outpost to retreat. The retreat was exemplary. The casualties had to be left in the field, because the few uninjured fighters had to carry their badly wounded comrades and support the rest of the wounded, returning down the road.
When the Jordanians saw that the 14th outpost was evacuated, they again took control of it.
In front of you is a circular path prepared by the JNF, the path ascends for observation from the 14th outpost on the Latrun area. It is about 500 meters long and is marked in green.
