Name: Eucalyptus Camaldulensis - Red River Gum

Origin: Australia

Traits: Evergreen with heights of 40 meters, this is one of 600 types of eucalyptus trees. In spring it flowers white to yellow, with hemispherical fruit. Bark from several types of eucalypts produces tannin and resin used in dyeing industries. The leaves produce an essential oil using in treating respiratory issues.

The story: In the town’s experimental field planted in the late 19th century, Israel’s first eucalyptus nursery was established, seedlings being sent out to various settlements supported by Baron de Rothschild as a means of helping dry out the swamps. It was later found that the tree actually is not suited to this purpose at all.
