Information about the Blue Flag program This beach was given the "Blue Flag" recognition, the "Blue Flag" is an environmental and social mark of quality for the preservation of natural values and heritage given to authorities that make a special effort to manage their beaches. the coastal environment and sea water while respecting the local environment and nature. In order to obtain the "Blue Flag" recognition, the authority and its beach operators must follow a number of criteria, including water quality, education and environmental information. Safety, services and facilities.
The program’s criteria evolve over time, so the authorities participating in the program continue to work on solving the environmental problems and challenges in order to receive a "Blue Flag", the recognition is given for one season and the grant is valid as long as the criteria are met. When this is not the case, the responsible parties are obliged to lower the blue flag.
This effort on the part of the local authority ensures that you and your family can visit selected bathing sites in a clean and safe environment. And, this ensures that the local authority will maintain a foundation of solid development.
You too can help the program with various actions to protect the environment: use trash cans on the beach - and recycle if possible, use public transportation, walk or rent a bicycle to get to the beach, obey the code of conduct on the beach, enjoy the nature on the beach and its surroundings - and treat them with respect and choose a vacation destination where the environment is respected - and an environmentally friendly hotel as well, if possible
The Blue Flag is awarded by FEE (Foundation of Environmental Education), an international non-governmental environmental organization exclusively represented in Israel by the EcoOcean association. The international FEE organization inspects the Blue Flag sites during the season.
Nature and heritage values This beach is characterized by fine, whitish sand found in the mountains of Ethiopia in Africa. The rocks of the Ethiopian mountains undergo weathering processes and are transported through the Nile River. In the river, along thousands of kilometers the rocks crumble and become thinner and thinner.
When the alluvium and river currents reached the Mediterranean Sea in Egypt, the rocks turned into sand with the direction of the currents in the Mediterranean Sea, the sand was transported towards Israel. This beach is one of the northernmost beaches consisting almost entirely of sand, as you go north, the sandy beach becomes more rocky. Along the sandy stretch of the beach, there are fish species in the water, among which the mullet, the diplodus and the Holocentridae are the best known. The latter, reached the coastal area through the Suez Canal, which was built in 1860 and created a gateway between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, and a shipping route between the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean.
The Suez Canal created the possibility of expanding the distribution of various species from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea in a one-way migration called "Lessepsian migration" according to the canal engineer.
Every summer, starting in 1976, people bathing on the beach notice swarms of stinging jellyfish called "nomad jellyfish", this jellyfish and several other types of jellyfish, invaded the waters of the Mediterranean Sea from the Red Sea through the Suez Canal.
In the sands of the beach at the water’s edge, you can see the beach crab, the beach crab that lives in small burrows in the wet sand that touches the sea water.
