The statue is of the Danish composer Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann (1805-1900) and is near the Garrison Church where the composer is buried. Hartmann is considered one of the leading Danish composers of the 19th century, a period known as the golden age of Danish music. In the bronze sculpture made by August Saabye in 1904 and placed in 1905, Hartmann is seen sitting on a chair and perusing musical notes.
In 2025, the same photographer also photographed the plaque on the bottom of the statues base, which reads: Komponisten J. P. E. HARTMANN 1805–1900 af AUGUST SAABY 1838–1919 Opstillet 1905 (til minde om 100-året)
