Ce square rend hommage à René Viviani (1863-1925), avocat et homme politique français. Député et sénateur socialiste, plusieurs fois ministre, il devient Président du Conseil en août 1914. À ce titre, il signe l’ordre de mobilisation générale, le 1er aout 1914. Cofondateur avec jean Jaurès du journal L’humanité, il s’est d’abord battu pour la paix avant d’assumer la guerre durant les selze premiers mois du conflit. L’église Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre a été bâtie au XIIe siècle sur les fondations d’un ancien sanctuaire du VIe siècle.

Un robinier faux-acacia aurait été planté par le jardinier d’Henri IV, Jean Robin, en 1601, ce qui en ferait le plus viell arbre de Paris.

Sign in a series of signs placed by the municipality of Paris describing the history of the city’s gardens.

The garden is named after René Viviani (1863-1925), who was the Prime Minister of France in the first year of the First World War. Known as someone who defended the rights of workers and workers’ organizations.

René Viviani garden
1928

This square pays tribute to René Viviani (1863-1925), French lawyer and politician. Socialist deputy and senator, several times minister, he became President of the Council in August 1914. In this capacity, he signed the general mobilization order on August 1, 1914. Co-founder with Jean Jaurès of the newspaper L’Humanité, he became first fought for peace before taking on the war during the first 15 months of the conflict. The Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre church was built in the 12th century on the foundations of an ancient sanctuary from the 6th century.

A false acacia tree would have been planted by Henri IV’s gardener, Jean Robin, in 1601, which would make it the oldest tree in Paris.
