The statue shows the man who was the South African freedom fighter, who after his war against the apartheid regime, and a long imprisonment, led to the abolition of racial discrimination. Served as President of South Africa. Thanks to his actions he won the Nobel Peace Prize (1993)
The statue in the Southbank Center was made by Ian Walters, and was first displayed in 1985 (the year Mandela was still a prisoner). The statue was set on fire by rioters. The current statue was moved to its place in 1988
