The statue made by Angela Conner commemorates theater and film actor Laurence Olivier (1907-1989) who is considered one of the greatest theater and film actors of the 20th century. The statue stands next to the Royal National Theater on the south bank of the Thames, a theater which Laurence Olivier helped to establish, and was its first director The statue was placed in 2007 on the 100th anniversary of the actors birth, and it features the actor in the character of Hamlet, a film directed by Olivier and in which he played the lead role. The film won two Oscars for Best Picture, and Olivier for Best Actor
