The San Francisco Botanical Garden is a 55-acre living museum within Golden Gate Parks 1,017 acres. Originally laid out in the 1890s by park supervisor John Mclaren, it officially opened to the public in 1940 after a bequest from Helene Strybing provided funds to complete it. The mild Mediterranean climate of San Francisco, which is characterized by cool dry summers and winter rainfall, provides ideal growing conditions for plants from around the world. The Garden is divided into collections comprised of plants from Mediterranean and mild-temperate climates, Cloud Forests and nymerous specialized collections.
