On the sign:
THE ATHENAEUM Designed in 1817 as a genteel building of three stories...containing two elegant shops with suitable apartments above for an assembly room, library and reading room with a steeple in the centre. The porch and statue (The Wee Wallace) were added in 1859 and commemorate William Wallace, Scots hero of the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.
The Battle of Stirling Bridge indicated on the sign took place during the First Scottish War of Independence, in 1297, a rebellion against King Edward I of England, led by William Wallace. In the battle the Scottish forces defeated the English forces.
