Mais il arrive à Paris sans ressources, et son beau père, tenancier dun café situé au débouché du Pont-Neuf, lui avance les fonds nécessaires à lachat de ses grades et de la charge davocat au Conseil du Roi. Ephémère ministre de la Justice au lendemain du 10 août 1792, Danton se consacre surtout à lœuvre importante accomplie par la Convention dans le domaine de linstruction publique: "Après le pain, léducation est le premier besoin dun peuple" déclare-t-il à la tribune. Il semploie aussi à galvaniser lénergie des citoyens appelés aux armes contre lenvahisseur: "Pour les vaincre, il nous faut de laudace..." Ce monument dAuguste Paris, qui le présente en effet comme lâme de la défense nationale, est lhommage officiel de la Ville pour le centenaire de la Révolution: inauguré en 1891, il occupe lemplacement exact du salon de son appartement.
