Hoffman was mainly involved in the field of organic chemistry, and "Hofmann elimination" and "Hofmann rearrangement" are named after him In 1845 he received an offer to serve as the director of the Royal College of Chemistry in London which was opened at that time. After two years in the position he returned to Germany (Bonn)
