Comments:
One of the series of signs describing historical places in Paris. The signs were placed starting in 1992 and are also called sucettes Starck (Starck’s Lollipops) after Philippe Starck who designed them.

The sign describes the Daunou Theater, a theater that has existed since 1920 and where some of the top actors played. As you can see in the photos, the theater building was undergoing a thorough renovation when it was photographed.

History of Paris

Théâtre Daunou
Rue Daunou was opened in 1806 to extend Rue Saint-Augustin, through the garden of the destroyed Capucines convent. In 1920, the actress Jeanne Renouardt had a small 350-seat theater built there, based on designs by Armand Rateau, with decor designed by Lanvin, white and gold, upholstered in blue velvet. It was inaugurated with a success that ran for two years, "Ta Bouche", an operetta by Maurice Yvain and Yves Mirande. The greatest actors have played there: Harry Baur, Fernand Gravey, Raymond Rouleau, Sophie Desmarets, Madeleine Robinson, Louis de Funés and Jacqueline Maillan, among others. Les Frères Jacques also performed there.
