One of the series of signs describing historical places in Paris. The signs were placed starting in 1992 and are also called sucettes Starck (Starck’s Lollipops) after Philippe Starck who designed them.

The sign depicts the street des Colonnes, a street built during the French Revolution.

History of Paris

Rue des Colonnes
Rue des Colonnes is one of the rare examples of construction from the revolutionary era. Purchaser of the Hôtel de Verneuil in 1792, a group of speculators had this ancient road designed by the architect Nicolas Vestier built from 1793 to 1795 by the architect Joseph Bénard and the entrepreneur Pierre Fichet. It is originally a private road between rue des Filles-Saint-Thomas and rue Feydeau, allowing access to the Feydeau theater but closed by gates from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

90 meters long, it was mutilated and divided by the construction of rue de la Bourse in 1826 and that of Dix-Décembre (Fourth of September) in 1864. Rue des Colonnes undoubtedly inspired the creators of the street by Rivoli
