The statue that was placed in the center of government in Medellin, Antioquia in 1988, was made by the sculptor Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt. The statue came to grace the district of Antioquia.

In 2016, during the celebrations of the 203rd anniversary of the independence of the province of Antioquia, part of his ashes were transferred to the statue and placed near the statue, as can be read on the sign.
