TOWER HILL MEDIEVAL POSTERN

This medieval postern gate give access to the City of London from the east. It is the only known surviving example of a large medieval gate tower in the City wall. The construction of the subway provided the opportunity to excavate and conserve the remains,

Three arrow loops in the multi angular tower commanded the approach. The postern was also protected by two wooden gates and a portcullis, the groove for which may still be seen.

The line quality of the masonry suggests that the postern might have been built from the late 13th century onwards by the royal masons who were carrying out major modifications to the Tower of London.

It is a fortified gate at the junction of London Wall and the London Moat, estimated to be between 1297-1308.

LA POTERE MEDIEVALE DE TOWER HILL

Cette poterne alchevnte donne necès la Cité de Londres si Ton vennit de lest. Cette large porte médiévale logée dans le mur de la Cité est le sel exemple en son geare qui nit survécu le temps.

C’est la construction du passage souterrain qui a fourni Toccasion de découvrir et conserver ces vestiges

Les trois meurtribes de la tour à multi-angles en commandaient T’approche. La poterne était également protégée par deux portes de bois et un portique dont on peut toujours voir les rainures.

L’excellente qualité du travail de maçonnerie sv.ggère que la poterne ait pu être bâtie à partir du 13ième siècle par les Maçons du Roi qui exécutaient la plus grande partie des modifications de la Tour de Londres
