This is a 1:1 scale replica of the torch held by the goddess of liberty Libertas embodied in the Statue of Liberty in New York. The torch is a gift given to the city of Paris by the international Herald Tribune newspaper in 1989, after the newspaper’s donation campaign for the centenary celebrations of its circulation as an English-language newspaper in Paris that took place in 1987. This is actually also a closing of the circle, since the Statue of Liberty was given to the city of New York and was given as a gift to the United States by the French government in 1886
The car accident in which Princess Diana was killed was near the torch. Her fans set up a commemorative corner in her memory at the foot of the torch Click for sign's details
