The statue commemorates the historian, ambassador of the United States in Russia and Germany, and member of the New York Senate, Andrew Dixon White, who, together with Ezra Cornell, founded Cornell University in 1865 as an institution that advocates equality regardless of skin color or religion. White was also the first president of the university and held the position for nearly 20 years.
